This is a project that I started working on in 2018 in collaboration with video artist Pete Telfer in Wales. I was feeling changes deep inside my body, in relation to my moon cycles. This movement towards menopause, as during any time of deep change, was an opportunity to make a ritual.
I chose to work with the Dulas River, Afon Dulas (Welsh) near Machynlleth Wales. In Welsh the name means Blue-Black. Sometimes subtle and lyrical, sometimes rushing fierce and overpowering. I listened to this river, touching it, diving into it, moving alongside it. We also found the remains of an old lead works in the same region. The Brutalist architecture set against the ancient, other-worldly landscape of Wales provided another dimension to this work.
I returned to Wales in the spring of 2019. We filmed my body breathing, and we recorded the vocal accompaniment.
